Uptime SLA at risk

Customer equipment and off-premises outages are where data center programs most often fall short.

Who this is for

Data centers, colocation facilities, hosting companies, and infrastructure service providers.

First look

Equipment breakdown, utility outages, and customer equipment in your care.

Where programs go wrong

Four places a data center program usually comes up short

Customer equipment in your care

Servers your customers own and you house aren't automatically covered by your property policy. How the program handles property in your care, custody, or control has to be spelled out, and your customer contracts should say who insures what.

Utility and power outages

Business income coverage often limits or excludes losses from an off-premises utility failure unless it's specifically added. For a facility that sells uptime, that's a central question.

Equipment breakdown

Generators, UPS systems, cooling, and switchgear keep the lights on. Equipment breakdown coverage, and how it values that equipment, deserves a close look.

Uptime promises

When an outage costs a customer money, the claim isn't only a property loss. SLAs create technology E&O exposure that property and GL don't answer.

Coverage that matters most

  • Equipment breakdown

  • Workers' comp

Common questions

Does a data center's property policy cover customer servers?

Not by default. Customer-owned equipment is usually outside your own property coverage unless the program is built to include it.

Are power outages covered?

It depends on the cause and the wording. Damage to equipment you own falls under property and equipment breakdown. An off-premises utility failure often needs coverage specifically added.

Do infrastructure providers need technology E&O?

If customers rely on your uptime and could claim a financial loss from an outage, yes. That exposure sits outside property and GL.
